Watch / DON'T Watch - Scary Movie Edition! Halloween #FridayFrivolity

Halloween horror movie reviews -- the WATCH vs DON'T Watch verdicts! Scary fun films Cabin in the Woods and The Visit, from Joss Whedon and M. Night Shyamalan.

I'm a week behind on #FridayFrivolity themes this installment, since the rest of the lovely hosts are doing "Crazy Costumes" and I'm still on "scary movies"... but being a little behind is kinda just how life is right now for me, so I hoped y'all wouldn't mind!  For my "Scary Movies" post, I thought I would do a WATCH vs DON'T Watch, along the same lines as my READ / DON'T Read book review posts... the movies I picked might seem a little random, but one of them I saw over the summer and hated so much that I've been dying to write about rofl, so this post just kinda fell into place from there.

Our movies up for discussion are....

The Visit and Cabin in the Woods.

Cabin in the Woods -- Watch!

Halloween horror movie reviews -- the WATCH vs DON'T Watch verdicts! Scary fun films Cabin in the Woods and The Visit, from Joss Whedon and M. Night Shyamalan.

Written and produced by Joss Whedon, of AvengersBuffy the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly fame (yes, that last one is the show all my pets are named after), Cabin in the Woods pokes fun at all the typical horror genre cliches while still taking full advantage of all the "Scare Factor" that they provide.  It takes place in what I would equate to Buffy's universe -- lots of creepy things that go bump in the night, and some people have the inside scoop on the supernatural... but most folks are oblivious and going about their lives in ordinary ways.  A fun aspect to this one is that the viewer knows what is going on from the beginning, while the characters in the movie have to figure out the "twist."

The Visit -- DON'T Watch!

Halloween horror movie reviews -- the WATCH vs DON'T Watch verdicts! Scary fun films Cabin in the Woods and The Visit, from Joss Whedon and M. Night Shyamalan.

Given that this film was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, I had high hopes that it would be his comeback... maybe it would even be equal to his awesomely fun Sixth Sense or The Village, or even (the less consistently awesome, but still fun) Signs.  Sadly, it's not.  It started off well, using the "found footage" format where the characters themselves are documenting their experiences, and capitalizing off of the fear of someone dear to you not being... well, reliable, to put it lightly, haha!  There's a twist at the end, as you would expect from good ol' M. Night, but unfortunately the movie comes a little unhinged towards the middle and into the end... and a huge reveal turns out to be "meh" at best.  They literally begin the movie hinting about it:  what was the Big Awful Thing that the children's mother did, that separated her from her parents for fifteen years??  And then when we're finally clued in at the very end of the film it turns out to be so weak that I said "seriously?" into an empty room as I watched.  There was also a COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY scene (actually, several, ugh) with dirty adult diapers, that added NOTHING to the movie, whatsoever.  Bottom line -- the preview to this movie is totally creepy and fun.  Tack on another minute or two at the end for the "twist," and you'd have a really entertaining, satisfying four minute movie.  A lot of the messiness in the middle, however, is sadly superfluous.

Here are both trailers, to further whet your curiosity...

  2. I don't watch scary movies and that usually includes thrillers, but your conclusion was hilarious: "Bottom line -- the preview to this movie is totally creepy and fun. Tack on another minute or two at the end for the "twist," and you'd have a really entertaining, satisfying four minute movie." LOL :D
